    Featured on the medal are Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II, Franz Joseph,Emperor of the Austrian Empire and the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed V.

    The original Triple Alliance, established in 1882, was a military alliance between Germany, Austria–Hungary, and Italy. In the early stages of World War One Italy gave support to the alliance but did not enter the war, and withdrew from the alliance in 1915. Meanwhile Germany signed a separate alliance with the Ottoman Empire on 2nd August 1914 and Austria-Hungary gave its support to this alliance.
