"Case of one of the famous French 75mm shells"

Found in the NZ frontline trenches on the Western Front.

This is part of a small collection of 'mementoes of the great war' presented to the Museum in 1918 by CJ Parr, MP. He had acquired them in 1916 when he was part of a New Zealand parliamentary visit to the war zone.

"There are also three German fuses for these shells, and it is of interest to note that" even in 1916 one of the types was of a much inferior class of workmanship to the other two. The base of the brass fuse has cut in it a full-range time list for explosion. There is also the empty casing of a French 75 shell, which has on the bottom 'made in U.S.A.' an evidence that in 1916 the Americans were supplying ammunition to our Allies as well as to Great Britain." Auckland Star, 31 May, 1918, page 4.
