Nose of German floating mine, WW1

The donor was the wife of 70049 Rifleman West Holmes Hill, 2nd Battalion, 3rd NZ Rifle Brigade, NZEF.

A self-employed farmer from Mareretu, Paparoa, West Hill left NZ with 36th Reinforcements on 16 October 1917. He landed initially at Suez and then at Southampton on 18.7.1918. Rifleman Hill spent three months overseas with the 2nd Battalion New Zealand Rifle Brigade from November 1918 to February 1919, before his return to the United Kingdom, and finally back to New Zealand on 29.9.1919.
