    Grenade part, WW1

Part of collection of "17 bombs" collected in France by 12/373 Major George Henry Holland MC, Auckland Infantry Regiment, NZEF.

This collection was presented to the Museum by Emily Holland of Remuera following the death of her husband John. Emily and John lost two sons both killed in action in May 1918 - 57847 Private Frederick John Holland, New Zealand Entrenching Battalion, killed in action on 8th May 1918, and his brother 12/373 Major George Henry Holland MC, Auckland Infantry Regiment, killed in action a week later on 15th May 1918. The collection of grenades probably belonged to George Holland. His father had written to the officer in Charge, War Expenses Branch, Wellington on 28th November 1918, making enquiries about some of his belongings, noting that "My son Capt. Geo Holland also had in France some curios which we hope will be forwarded to Headquarters in Wellington and sent to us." [copy of letter in Service Record, Archives New Zealand].
