    Headdress (English)

  • Description

    Pare ura. Headdress of a rakei ura (full dance costume). Woven from rauara (pandanus). Woven in right-angle check and decorated with kiriau (hibiscus fibre), puka seeds, and clusters of pupu rengarenga (small yellow shells), all of which are sewn onto the pare ura using cotton thread. A small rectangular piece of black material, possibly vinyl, is sewn into the centre inside of the pare ura. A safety pin is attached to the top of the black material.

    Two metal eyes are sewn onto a back strap, with two metal hooks also sewn onto a back strap using pink/red coloured cotton thread.
