Corporal O'Donnell was killed in action by shrapnel at Plugges Plateau, Gallipoli, during the Battle of the Landing. He was aged 21 years and was one of a hundred Aucklanders killed on that day. He was later buried at Plugge's Plateau Cemetery (B.4). Jack O'Donnell was born at Kaeo, Northland on 25 December 1893. He was a keen rugby playeer and served as a volunteer with the Territorials with the rank of Sergeant. For many years he lived at Kaihu near Dargaville, where he was emplkoyed by Mr. E. Trounson. At the time of his enlistment on 11 August 1914 Jack O'Donnell was employed as a bushman by Robert Gibbons of Piha. His parents, William and Catherine Elizabeth O'Donnell lived at 50 Grange Road, Mt.
