    Table mat (English)

  • Description

    Placemat. Rectangular in shape. Woven from rauara (pandanus) with dyed-black overlaid apuraka (giant swamp taro) akamanea (decoration) around the borders of the mat. Hatu commencement (the arrangement of the connected butt ends in a continuous row for the full width of the mat). Woven out in check. Paretumu mat (term used to describe fine mats with a decorative band around each border).

    Taviri finish around edges of mat (where cut-off wefts are twisted under surface of mat for concealment). Dyed-black overlaid strips of apuraka form surface pattern featuring katikativai motif (two rows of check that touch) placed in the centre of the decorative borders.
