  • Description

    Placemat. Rectangular in shape. Woven from rauara (pandanus) with overlaid dyed-black apuraka (giant swamp taro) akamanea (decoration). Hatu commencement (the arrangement of the connected butt ends in a continuous row for the full width of the mat). Woven out in check. Paretumu mat (term used to describe fine mats with a decorative band around each border). Decorative band of overlaid dyed-black apuraka around each border of the mat forming a patara (zig-zag) type pattern.

    Taviri finish around edges of mat (where cut-off wefts are twisted under surface of mat for concealment).
