    Titi akamanea (Cook Islands)

  • Description

Rakei ura. Waistband of a full dance costume. Woven from rauara (pandanus) and machine-sewn onto pink cloth. The waistband is decorated with flower representations woven from strands of rauara. A puka seed is hand-sewn, using cotton thread, into the centre of each flower representation. Woven strands of rauara form patara (serrated) strips that are hand-sewn onto the waistband using cotton thread.

The patara strips hang from the waistband and are decorated with tassels made of kiriau (hibiscus fibre). Each tassel is decorated with puka and poepoe seeds (Job's tears seeds) that are sewn onto the patara strips using nylon wire. A metal hook is sewn onto the back end of the waistband. A metal eye is sewn onto the opposite front end of the waistband.
