human history
  • Other Name

    Model canoe (English)

  • Description

Vaka. Canoe. This is a model vaka. Each component has been carved from maota (type of wood material preferred for vaka building). The wood material is of a light brown colour. This vaka features a tino vaka (hull) a prowl cover that portrays both puke (bow and stern) and oa (starboard and port), two tautoko (crossbooms) and a hama (outrigger). A separate edition such as a fohe (paddle) also features as part of the vaka.

The tino vaka is smooth, elongated and tapers from its mid section into two points for both the stern and bow. Its interior surface shows hafted markings. The prowl cover portrays engraved markings over its entire surface. Both splash backs are featured as a raised square ridge with carved triangular designs. Both the stern and bow portray carved elongated triangular markings also. The oa feature short triangle carvings that repeat from one end towards the other. Several perforations have been made along both the edges of the tino vaka and prowl cover for the purpose inserting pulu (cordage of coconut sennit). The pulu has been utilized for assembling both components to portray the main body of the vaka. A single seat has been wedged inside of the vaka between the positioning of the two tautoko. Both of which have also been lashed to the vaka with a different type of cordage to that of pulu. A single cordage has been attached to both the tautoko and left loose. The hama which has been lashed to the ends of the tautoko is long and curved featuring a point towards the front and a angled, circular cross-section at the other end. The fohe portrays a long handle and tear drop shaped blade.
