Pandanus basket. This a handwoven kato. It is rectangular in form and features an opening at the top. Two curved kavei (handles) have been attached and woven into the rectangular shaped receptacle of the kato along the edges of the opening. Its entirety has been made from lau fā (pandanus). The kato is made of two layers of weaving. The interior of the kato shows a lalaga (plain woven) interior in a natural pale brown colour. The exterior of the bag shows a decorative weave made up of light purple and natural pale brown pinnules. The base of the pinnules show lau fā hika (pandanus strips that have lines scored upon them) These have been woven together to form decorative geometric designs. An alternating border of pale green and natural pale brown woven pinnules finish the base edges of the kato. The opening edges of the kato have been finished off with a looping technique of plain and natural pale brown lau fā.WāhiNiueAccession Number1948.36Rā Tāpiringa1948Tohu Tuakiri Kē29808 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Kato lau fa, 1948.36, 29808, Photographed by Richard Ng,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1948.36, 29808Takenga ā-AhureaNiueanKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiNiueRāPre 1948Tikanga WaihangahandwovenWaitohu/mākaNIUE; 29808 (handwritten)Pāohopandanus (leaf)/leaf (plant material)/plant materialRaraunga Ine340mm170mm300mmHuinga KaupapaBasketry/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Fibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūBasketContainerDistribution & Transportation ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua16 Sep 2019 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
