  • Description

bamboo container, to hold packages of bean jam, yokan. tied with natural plant fibre twine.

this container is a minature version of the cages which the cormorant fishermen of the Nagara River carry their birds. it comes from Gifu City, through which the river flows, and is designed to hold packges of the bean jam called yokan. the material is bamboo, and the twine is made of natural plant fibres. One can readily see why traditional packaging like this is vanishing in the presnet age of synthetics and speed.
