Pendant of conus shell. This is a pendant that would be feature as part of a neck ornament otherwise referred to as te mwae te nikabono (Neck ornament of shell). It is circular in shape and flat in form. It has been ground from te nouo (cone shell; conus). This shell pendant has been filed into a convex form. The broken circular lines are indicative of the spires lines of growth. A small circular perforation is featured at the top where a cord of te kora (cordage of coconut sennit) may have once been threaded through. The reverse of the pendant concaves through a series of circular furrows that define the spires interior. The pendant is off-white in colour, smooth on the top surface and slightly polished on the undersideWāhiOcean Island/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1948.34Rā Tāpiringa1948Tohu Tuakiri Kē30048.2 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te nikabono; 1948.34; 30048.2; Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1948.34, 30048.2Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiOcean Island/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1948Tikanga Waihangadrilled [handmade]Waitohu/māka30048.2 (ethnology number) Ornaments of shell; Ocean Is.
