    kauri single slab with carved decoration attached at top arch, carved in possibly Gothic Revival style, varnished

    inscription carved into front of headstone "IN AFFECTIONATE / REMEMBRANCE / OF / DANIEL McLEAY / LATE OF FORTROSE, SCOTLAND / WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE / 30TH MARCH 1883 / AGED 54 YEARS / REST IN PEACE"

    Kauri headstone: Daniel McLeay, died 30.3.1883

    Daniel McLeay, died in Thames, New Zealand on 30th March 1883.. He was buried at the Tararu Cemetery on 2nd April.

    Born in Fortrose, Scotland, Daniel McLeay had lived in New Zealand for 23 years prior to his death and had been working as a shoe-maker. At the age of 23 years, before coming to New Zealand, he had married Christine Simpson. At the age of 31, Following his arrival in New Zealand, he married Rebecca Whitehead. There were eight children from this second marriage, ages ranging from 3 years to 20 years at the time of Daniel's death.
