The artist who carved the piece, Kuai Maueha (1933-1981) was born into the Tongagaba sub-clan of the Kaitu'u clan (sa'a) of Bellona (a Polynesian outlier southwest of the Solomon Islands). His first exhibition was held at the Solomon Islands National Museum in October 1974. Shortly after this Maueha spent 3 months in Suva, Fiji at the University of the South Pacific as Artists-in-Residence. From 1969 until his death he continued to exhibit.

His reputation had grown to the extent that most of his works ended up abroad and very few are in evidence in the Solomon Islands today.

"Kuai Maueha lived and worked at the USP Suva Campus for three months. For my family and me and many others, his stay was one of the most meaningful events that has happened to our University...Kuai is one of the most unique personalities in Oceania. His artistic gift is only a part of that uniqueness." [Prof. Albert Wendt. MANA. A South Pacific Journal of Language and Literature. Vol 3. No.1 October, 1978]
