    Waist garment (English)

  • Description

    Pareu. Dance skirt. Composite materials of multiple colours. Multiple strands of kiriau (hibiscus fibre) knotted together along the top to create a thick layer. The natural kiriau strands are dyed bright blue along the bottom two thirds. Multiple decorative elements attached along the top band over the kiriau such as yellow fabric creating a waistband with shells attached spelling out the word 'MANGAIA' and other decorative motifs.

    9 green and 9 red tassels made from kiriau and dark puka seeds decorate the lower edge of the waistband. Two cords act as the ties at either and of the Pareu.
