The second component is a sharp pointed tip that has been tightly lashed with te kora string to the curved end of the first piece, completing the fish hook. The top of the matau has been bound with a much thicker two-ply te kora cord that presumably would have been attached to the snood or to te ao (the fishing line). This cordage has been looped and tied for easy storage. The wood is dark brown in colour and slightly gnarled but smooth-surfaced. Its exterior is speckled with small abrasions and marks where the surface of the wood has been scraped away.
