Te matau

human history
  • Other Name

    Wooden fishing hook (English)

  • Description

Te matau. Wooden fish hook. This large fish hook is made from te ngea (ironwood) and comprises two individual pieces of wood that have been lashed together with te kora (coconut fibre cord). This type of matau was used for deep sea fishing; for catching sharks and other big fish. The first piece, which accounts for a large portion of the fish hook, has been carved from a branch of te ngea that has a natural sharp, angular curve appropriate for the objects intended use.

The second component is a sharp pointed tip that has been tightly lashed with te kora string to the curved end of the first piece, completing the fish hook. The top of the matau has been bound with a much thicker two-ply te kora cord that presumably would have been attached to the snood or to te ao (the fishing line). This cordage has been looped and tied for easy storage. The wood is dark brown in colour and slightly gnarled but smooth-surfaced. Its exterior is speckled with small abrasions and marks where the surface of the wood has been scraped away.
