Te binobino n tabunea

human history
  • Other Name

    Coconut shell bottle (English)

  • Description

Te binobino n tabunea. Coconut shell bottle. This is a receptacle used in magic. It is a small coconut shell that is circular in shape and spherical in form. It is dark brown in colour. The exterior surface shows it has had its husk removed. Some circular pores are present on the top half of the bottle. Three circular depressions that define the eyes are present at the top. A fourth may have been drilled to create an entry point into the hollowed shell.

A woven te ira (pandanus leaf) has been made into a stopper and wedged into the circular opening. A two-ply cord of dark brown human hair and te kora (coconut sennit) has been threaded into the centre of the three circular eyes as a small looped handle. Some dry white residue remains on the side of the bottle.
