  • Other Name

    Neck ornament (English)

  • Description

Te mwae. Neck ornament. It is worn around the neck as part of body adornment. Rarely worn by men, women and girls were usually adorned with mwae particularly for the ruoia dances. At times it can be worn as a ririko (sash) over the shoulder and across the chest. This is made of multiple miniature coconut shell discs strung on a plaited fibre string.

This mwae has three strings of coconut shell discs which are tied together at each end, whereas the tied ends are not joined together.
