    Whale ivory (English)

  • Description

Te kauae te buangui. Whale ivory. This is an ornament featuring te buangui (whale teeth) and te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage). Four large pendants of te buangi have been threaded together with te kora. The pendants of te buangi appear to have originally been whole and then split down the centre from its form. Their cross-section shows a cresent-like shape and the internal hollow cavity. The end in which has been threaded onto kora portrays the root end of te buangui.

Single or double circular perforations have been drilled into each pendant for te kora to be threaded through. The kora has been knotted at enach end holding the pendants together.
