Red shell pendant. This is a pendant made from the shell of the koikoinanti (spondylid). The pendant is almond shaped with a shallow convex form. The end that features the drilled perforation has been filed into a flat edge. The convex surface has been smoothed revealing red colouring and fine ridges from the shells' original exterior. The opposite side of the pendant is concave and shows the remains of the original interior of the shell that is slightly rough upon the surface, mostly red in colour with some white colouring. The depth of the shell material can be seen from where it has been cut into an almond shape. Te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage) or te nimwaerere (Human hair and coconut sennit fibre cordage) would often be threaded through the drilled perforation to create te mwae (Neck ornament). Te Ntabo would be worn around the neck by either sexes. The koikoinanti can also be referred to as 'the small shell of the spirits' and is regarded a highly valuable possesion.WāhiBeru/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1936.295Rā Tāpiringa1936Tohu Tuakiri Kē22921 (ethnology)29 (Maude Collection)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te ntabo; 1936.295; 22921, 29; Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1936.295, 22921; 29Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiBeru/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1936Pāohospondylus/seashell/shellTaumata whakarōpūOrnament, NeckBody AdornmentOrnamentPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua30 Nov 2018 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
