Sash ornament. This is a sash made to be worn across the chest and under the armpit. It is made from te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage), te nana (coconut shell discs) and four black glass beads. The kora is a mid brown in colour and has been used to thread a series of small circular discs of te nana. The discs of te nana range in circumference, are dark brown in colour with a matte surface texture. A small circular perforation has been drilled into the centre of the discs where the kora has been threaded through. It has been fastened at one end. The left over kora has also been threaded with a series of te nana and then finished with two small black glass beads at either end. The short and loose fibrous ends of the kora can be seen after the small black glass beads.WāhiTabiteuea/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1936.295Rā Tāpiringa1936Tohu Tuakiri Kē22942.2 (ethnology)125 (Maude Collection)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te anibai; 1936.295; 22942.2, 125; Cultural Permissions… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1936.295, 22942.2; 125Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiTabiteuea/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1936Tikanga Waihangadrilled woven [handmade] [handwoven]Waitohu/māka22942.2; Tabiteuea; Gilbert Is.; Dep: MR. & MRS.
