    Ornamental coconut shell discs (English)

  • Description

Te nana. Coconut shell discs. This is a prepared length of te nana (coconut shell discs) that have been threaded onto te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage). The kora is mid-brown in colour and has been used to knot off a series of te nana leaving two short loose fibrous ends. The length of threaded te nana has been left unfastened. The series of te nana are small, hard and circular.

They have a small circular perforation in the centre where te kora has been threaded through. They are smooth and matte in surface texture and dark brown in colour. These would have been prepared and kept with the intention of being made into te katau (waist ornament) for special occassions.
