Te mwae te nana

Te mwae te nana. Neck ornament of coconut shell discs. This was made for a child. It is made from te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage) and te nana (coconut shell discs). The kora is a mid brown in colour and has been used to thread a series of small circular discs of te nana. The discs of te nana vary in circumference, are dark brown in colour and matte in surface texture. A small circular perforation has been drilled into the centre of the discs where the kora has been threaded through. There are two strands of threaded te nana, both have been fastened together at one end. One of the threaded strands reveals the two-ply kora showing it is slightly longer than the other threaded strand of te nana. The knot is loose and shows some fibrous selvedged ends.
