    Waist ornament of cowrie shells (English)

  • Description

    Taona n riri te burewa. Cowrie shell waist ornament. This taona n riri (waist ornament) consists of a single row of burewa (egg cowrie shells), each perforated and strung on a cord of te kora (coconut sennit). This line of burewa on te kora is incorporated into a flat band of woven baan ni kaina (pandanus fibre). The burewa are white in colour with a glossy sheen. The kora is light brown in colour. The baan ni kaina waistband is natural in colour.

    At each end of the overall taona n riri are fine cords of te kora for tying the ornament around the waist.
