(English)Kupu whakaahuaTe katau te tumara. Waist ornament of shells. This is worn, by girls and young women, over the skirt as part of their dance attire. This is made up of three components; te tumara (nautilus shells), dried baa ni kaina (pandanus leaves) and te kora (sennit cordage). A wide band of baa ni kaina is rarangaki together as base of te katau. Off-white tumara, a total of thirty-two, are threaded onto the band. For this purpose, te tumara have dual perforations for precise band attachment. A small two-ply te kora is used for threading. Only one end of te kora remains elongated.
