Te mamata

human history
  • Other Name

Funnel made of coconut shell (English)

  • Description

Te mamata. Funnel. Made from a sturdy te nana (coconut shell), this mamata (funnel) is dark brown in colour with a smooth surface treatment. A circular hole is made at the base, with slight rim around it. This central opening was likely made with a hand-powered pump drill. A small hole is perforated around the side edge of the mamata with a fine twine of te kora (coconut sennit) threaded through it for suspension.

One purpose of this mamata could be to pour liquid accurately into a container such as a binobino (coconut shell water carrier).
