Funnel. Made from a sturdy te nana (coconut shell), this mamata (funnel) is dark brown in colour with a smooth surface treatment. A circular hole is made at the base, with slight rim around it. This central opening was likely made with a hand-powered pump drill. A small hole is perforated around the side edge of the mamata with a fine twine of te kora (coconut sennit) threaded through it for suspension. One purpose of this mamata could be to pour liquid accurately into a container such as a binobino (coconut shell water carrier).WāhiBeru/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1936.295Rā Tāpiringa1936Tohu Tuakiri Kē23007.2 (ethnology)56 (Maude Collection)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te mamata; 1936.295; 23007.2, 56; Cultural Permissions… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1936.295, 23007.2; 56Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiBeru/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1936Tikanga Waihangacarved polishedWaitohu/māka23007.2 BERU GILBERT IS.
