Te rabatan te matau

human history
  • Other Name

    Fish lure shank (English)

  • Description

Te rabatan te matau. Shank. This is a component that would be used to complete a whole te matau (fish hook). It is made entirely from te kuano (phosphate) from Banaba (Ocean) island. It has been ground into a length that is cylindrical in form. One end has been tapered, this is where a perforation would be drilled for the line to be attached. The opposite end has been cut to show a circular cross-section.

Small notches or nodes would normally be filed near the circular cross-section end. This would be for the purpose of attaching tabon te matau (point) to the notches or nodes. Its exterior is rough in texture and hard in material. It is pale yellow in colour with fine porous remains left across the surface.
