Te rabatan te matau

human history
  • Other Name

    Fish lure shank (English)

  • Description

Te rabatan te matau. Shank. This is a component that would be used to complete a whole te matau (fish hook). It is made entirely from te kuano (phosphate) from Banaba (Ocean) island. It has been ground into a length that is cylindrical in form. One end has been tapered and rounded off. It features two small circular perforations that have been drilled through the side. This would be the purpose for attaching a line.

The opposite end has been cut to show a circular cross-section. A ridge line runs adjacent to the tapered end. A small notch has been filed out on an angle upon the circular cross-section, this is where tabon te matau (point) would be lashed to. Its exterior is smooth in texture, hard in material and shows some transparency. It is pale yellow in colour, portraying natural horizontal layers of white throughout its material transparency.
