    Te matou tifa. Fishing hook. This matou tifa is no longer made in modern times. It is made from turtle bone with a matte, smooth finish.

    According to the ethnology record: '[it is a Nutao [sic] hook, not made for some 25 years, used for takua fish now also disappeared (approx. weight of takua 15 lbs. Reported to be efficient. Natural in colour. Curved with notches at top of hook for lashing fibre line to. obsolete'. According to an additional attribution note by Beasley: "only found in graves and middens". Similar hooks were made from coral.
