human history
  • Other Name

Fish hook of mother of pearl shell (English)

  • Description

Te kaneati. Fish hook of mother of pearl. This te kaneati is made of the following components: te rabatan te matau (shank), te tabon te matau (point), a hackle and cordage. Te rabatan is made from te bwaeo (mother of pearl shell). It is pale yellow in colour with some shimmer and transparency. It has been filed into a length where one end has been tapered into a short point and the other end into a flat spatulate form. It has been cut from the hinge segment of the shell.

This is defined by its varied depth. One end shows where a circular perforation has been drilled into the side. This would be for the purpose of te ao (line) to be inserted and attached. A long length of cord has been inserted and knotted around the perforation. An extension of the same cord has been coiled around the centre of te rabatan te matau. Opposite this, the spatulate end of te rabatan te matau has been utilized in lashing te tabon te matau (point) and a hackle of te ira (hair). Te ira is made up of pale yellow strands. Te tabon te matau is also made from te bwaeo. It is grey and off-white in colour. It has been filed into its current form from a thin part of the shell. It is shaped like a two-sided hook. Two circular perforations have been drilled through te tabon te matau. These perforations have been utilized to position te tabon te matau in line with te rabatan. Te ao that has been secured at the perforation through te rabatan te matau extends down and through the double perforations upon te tabon te matau further securing the components to form a whole te kaneati.
