Te matau

human history
  • Other Name

    Fish hook (English)

  • Description

Te matau. Fish hook. This te matau is made of the following components: te rabatan te matau (composite shank), te tabon te matau (point), a short hackle and two kinds of cordage. Te rabatan is made up of two parts from te bwaeo (mother of pearl shell). Both are pale yellow in colour with some shimmer and transparency. It appear both parts have been joined at the centre of its depth and then filed into its current length. Both ends have been tapered into short points.

One end shows where a circular perforation has been drilled through its side. A discoloured length of te ao (line) has been inserted and attached. The remaining extension of te ao has been coiled around the length of te rabatan te matau. The other end shows where furrows have been filed out the sides. These have been utilized for lashing te tabon te matau and a hackle of te ira (hair) forming a complete te matau. Te nimwaerere (cordage of human hair and coconut sennit fibres) has been used to lash the short hackle of light coloured hair and te tabon te matau to te rabatan te matau. Te tabon te matau has been made from te ri (bone). It appears to have been worked into its current form, a slim cone-like form that curves towards the concave of te rabatan te matau.
