Shank. This is a component that would be used to complete a whole te matau (fish hook). It is made entirely from te kuano (phosphate). It has been ground into a short length that flat in depth. One side shows where a linear raise has been filed out. One end of te rabatan te matau has been tapered into a short point and features two nicks and a further two notches. This is where a line would be wedged and lashed around. The opposite end tapers in and shows two small nodes that have been filed out and finished with a flat edge. This is the section where tabon te matau (point) would be lashed to. A small furrow has been filed out across the flat surface defining where the tabon te matau would be positioned. It has been covered with a dried brown residue. Its exterior is smooth in texture, hard in material and shows some transparency.
