  • Other Name

Waist mat of pandanus leaves (English)

  • Description

Kie. Woven dancing mat. This kie is woven in fine single check from processed strips of baa ni kaina into a wide rectangular shape. This kie would have been worn as part of men's dance performance. The strips of baa ni kaina are golden yellow in colour. In the initial preparation of the baa ni kaina when the leaves are harvested as young green leaves, they produce the golden yellow colour.

The baa ni kaina are woven with te ira n atu (human hair) overlaid in grid-like pattern across the surface of the kie with four long rectangular areas and the lower portion of the weave left showing the natural baa ni kaina.
