Waist ornament of coconut shell discs. This is a waist ornament made from a series of circular discs of te nana (coconut shell) and te kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibres). It consists of two lengths of te kora that have been threaded with discs of te nana. The discs of te nana portray an average diametre of 20mm. A small perforation has been made through the central area of the disc for the purpose of inserting te kora. They range from dark to light brown in tone and are matte in surface texture. Both lengths have been fastened together at either end leaving a loose extension of te kora. Te katau te nana would be worn atop te riri (skirt) as part of a dance costume.WāhiNonouti/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1936.295Rā TāpiringaCirca 1936Tohu Tuakiri Kē23997 (ethnology)156 (Maude Collection)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te katau te nana, 1936.295, 23997, 156, Photographed by… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira, 1936.295, 23997KohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua unknown (Maker)WāhiNonouti/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāCirca 1936Tikanga Waihangacarved drilled woven [handmade] [handwoven]Waitohu/māka23997; MONOUTI, GILBERT IS.; DEP: MAUDE Coll.
