  • Description

Te katau te nana. Waist ornament of coconut shell discs. This is a waist ornament made from a series of circular discs of te nana (coconut shell) and te kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibres). It consists of two lengths of te kora that have been threaded with discs of te nana. The discs of te nana portray an average diametre of 20mm. A small perforation has been made through the central area of the disc for the purpose of inserting te kora.

They range from dark to light brown in tone and are matte in surface texture. Both lengths have been fastened together at either end leaving a loose extension of te kora. Te katau te nana would be worn atop te riri (skirt) as part of a dance costume.
