Belt made of human hair. The nuota is a waist ornament or belt used as part of the adornment for Kiribati male dancers' costumes. It is made with long lengths of flat braided ira n atu (human hair) and these are all black in colour. The eight long braids are plaited in 3-ply technique and loosely sewn together with european twine to create more width. Around the mid section these are all laid flat together with black thread. The nuota is bristly in texture overall as loose ends of invidivual hair strands stray from each braid.WāhiTabiteuea/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1936.295Rā Tāpiringa1936Tohu Tuakiri Kē24012 (ethnology)201 (Maude Collection)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te nuota, 1936.295, 24012, 201, Photographed by Andrew… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1936.295, 24012; 201Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiTabiteuea/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1936Tikanga Waihangaplaited sewnWaitohu/māka24012 Tabiteuea KIRIBATI dep.
