Te kaburinako

human history
  • Other Name

    Disc game (English)

  • Description

Te kaburinako. Disc game. This is a set of ten discs that make up the game te kaburianko. Each disc is similar in shape, mostly circular with the some showing squared off edges. Each one has been cut from bora n on (chest plate of the turtle). Each disc varies in diameter, the smallest being 750mm and the largest being 800mm, with an average depth of 5mm. Their depth can be portrayed by the bone's porous texture and the angle they have been cut on.

Their surface exteriors portray individualistic features that define where they have been cut from te bora n on. Their exteriors show porous textures, small furrows and in some examples, the centre ridge of te bora n on. These appear to have been polished and are smooth to handle. They vary in colour from off-white to grey in tone. Te kaburinako is played by two pairs of players. A rolled mat would be folded between them. Each pair playing against each other would throw a disc with the aim of trying to balance it upon the folded mat. Each pair would be allocated the same amount of discs. To finish the game, a player would aim to knock the opposing teams discs off the folded mat.
