Waist ornament of moon shells (English)

  • Kupu whakaahua

Te katau te tumara. Waist ornaments of moon shells. This is a woven waist ornament made from three materials types: te tumara (moon shell; Nautica), te ira (pandanus leaf) and te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage). A base of woven te ira forms the belt of te katau te tumara. It is pale yellow in colour and has been finished with a serrated edge across the horizontal edges. Two rows of tumara shells have been lashed with te kora onto the base of the belt.

Holes have been bored into the spire part of the tumara shells where te kora has been threaded through and then stitched onto the belt of te ira. The basting stitches of te kora can be seen on the reverse of the belt. The tumara shells are bulbous in form, polished and white in colour. They are similar in size and some can be defined by their lines of age and some brown tones among their off-white exteriors. Two of the tumara show fractured perforations. The ends of te katau (waist ornament) each feature strands of te kora that would be used to fasten te katau across the waist and on top of te riri (skirt) and beneath another te katau of te nana (coconut shell) discs. This is an ornament worn for dance worn by women and young girls for the ruoia dances.
