    Gauntlet (English)

  • Description

    Te bai n itau. Gauntlet. This would be applied to cover one's knuckles and then be used in combat. It is made entirely of two-ply kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage). It is bulbous in form. The exterior is made up of knotted and curled two-ply kora. It has been woven to form a concave exterior showing how it would be applied to the wearers knuckles and fists. The surface texture is coarse and rough. The underside is convex and shows an interior of woven and knotted layers.

    The surrounding edge has a woven finish with a small loose, fibrous strand of kora. It is a mid tone in brown and thick in depth.
