human history
  • Other Name

    Back scratcher (English)

  • Description

Kai ni ngongo. Back scratcher. This is a wooden back scratcher carved from ngea (pemphis acidula) wood. It has been carved as one entire piece. It features a long cylindrical wooden handle with a tapered, blunt point at the base of the kai ni ngongo. A small foot has been carved out at the opposite end. A curved, blunt edge forms the end of the foot where the depth extends out towards the handle section. Hafted nicks dapple the curved, blunt edge of the foot section.

A small linear furrow features at the pointed end of the object. It is dark brown in colour and polished in surface texture.
