  • Other Name

Receptacle made of tortoise shell (English)

  • Description

Te bora n tabakea. Tortoise shell receptacle. This is a tortoise’s shell turned into a receptacle. The term tabakea refers to the species of tortoise. It is concave in form with an oval-like rim. A tapered point features at one end and then a curved funnel at the other end. The edges in between are serrated. Inside the concave, a vertical furrow for the spine features horizontal ridging that draws towards the edges.

The surface textures show a range of porous and flaked areas. Its colour varies from light to dark brown tones. The tortoise shell can be suspended from the roof of a house and/or used as a general receptacle.
