Te beekaa. Grater. This is a grater. It consists of three different material components: a horse shoe shaped form made of te nana (coconut shell), te kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibre) used for lashing and a light brown wood made from te uri (Beach gardenia; Guettarda speciosa). The horseshoe shaped form at the raised end of the wooden component has been cut from the curve of a spherical coconut shell. It is mid brown in colour and matte in surface texture.

The ends of the horseshoe form feature four drilled perforation where te kora has been threaded through to lash it to the raised arm of the wooden component. The wooden component extends downwards and out to form a base that would be sat on when in use. It is square in cross-section. A crack runs horizontally along the base section. The raised arm section is semi-circular in cross section. The surface texture of te uri is dappled in some areas. This implement would be used to grate the pulp of pandanus fruit. One would sit on the base section and use the horseshoe component to tiranngnga (squeeze) out the flesh to prepare tuae (dried, layers of pandanus pulp).
