This is a large wooden fish hook. It has been carved and filed from te ngea (pemphis scidula) wood that is of a mid tone brown colour. It is made up of two parts: a point and a shank that bends. The top of the shank features a gauge that has been filed out in two places. The shank extends to portray a bend. At the end of the shank's bend, a seperate part such as the point has been joined beneath a coil of te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage). The point has been carved to face inwards towards the shank. The wood's grain can be seen across the surface texture and some of the tools markings remain in some areas. A furrow remains over the bend of the point that define the wood's natural characteristics. Small dark brown circles dapple over the wood's surface.WāhiBeru/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1936.95Rā Tāpiringa1936Tohu Tuakiri Kē24093 (ethnology)47 (Maude Collection)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te matau, 1936.95, 24093, 47, Photographed by Daan Hoffmann,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1936.95, 24093; 47Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiBeru/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1936Tikanga Waihangacarved lashed [handmade] [handwoven]Waitohu/māka24093; BERU IS.; GILBERT IS.
