Red shell neck ornament. This is a pendant that has been cut from the shell of koikoinanti (bivalve shell fish; Gafraum tumidum). It is concave in form and shaped like an almond. The convex surface has been smoothed yet still retains some of the original ridged surface of the shell. Opposite, the concave surface shows the remains of the original interior of the shell. The depth of the shell material can be seen from where it has been cut into an almond shape. The convex surface shows a very pale red colour. White defines some of the linear crevices. The concave interior features an off-white centre, framed by a smoothed surrounding area that is whiter than the centre. A circular perforation has been drilled into the more curved end of the almond shaped ornament. A two-ply kora (coconut sennit fiber cordage) has been threaded and knotted through the drilled circular perforation that features at one end of the shell pendant. A small glass white bead has been attached with the kora upon the exterior of the shell. It would be worn around the neck, placed above the bunna (throat ornament of human hair) and worn mostly by men. The koikoinanti can also be referred to as 'the small shell of the spirits' and is regarded a highly valuable possesion.WāhiTabiteuea/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1936.295Rā Tāpiringa1936Tohu Tuakiri Kē24098.4 (ethnology)240 (Maude Collection)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te ntabo; 1936.295; 24098.4, 240; Cultural Permissions… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1936.295, 24098.4; 240Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKohingaMaudeKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiTabiteuea/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1936Tikanga Waihangacarved drilled plaited [handmade] [handwoven]Waitohu/māka24098.4 (handwritten) 240 (label, stick on/label)Pāohoshellsennit/cord (fiber product)coconut (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibrebead/trimming (material)Raraunga Ine300mm250mmHuinga KaupapaAdornment/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Men/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūOrnament, NeckBody AdornmentOrnamentPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua30 Nov 2018 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
