human history
  • Other Name

    Beater (English)

  • Description

Te atibu n bokaboka. Beater. This is a beater made of te ati nari (hard coral stone). It is cylindrical in form and tapers inwards towards the top. The top and base have been filed to form convex surfaces. It is heavy in weight. The surface is porous in texture, off-white in colour with some darkened parts among the crevices. The base has residue from where it has made regular contact.

This type of beater would have been used in beating the edible part of the pandanus fruit for preparation of kabubu (a preserved powder form for consumption at special occasions).
