  • Description

Te tanai. Hafted adze tool. Clam shell adze blade. This is an adze blade. It is a component of a tool used in cutting hard materials. It has been carved from te aubunga (clam shell; tridacna gigas). It is convex and shaped like a trapezoid. The blade edge tapers to form an edged area for contact when in use. The convex surface is thick in depth through the centre area. It is off-white in colour with a series of furrows running diagonally across the surface.

The edges are filed and a deep uneven bevelled has been formed at the smaller end of the blade. The base features a flat surface area across the widest part and then raises into a ridge towards the end of the blade.
