Sisi

human history
  • Other Name

    Waist ornament (English)

  • Description

Sisi. Waist ornament. This sisi is part of a set which is worn during Futuna dances such as the soamako. This sis is bright and multi-coloured and made from dyed fau (hibiscus) and feathers. The waistband base is made from woven strips of lau fala (pandanus fibre) and attached on the top is a row of dyed fau rosettes. Along the length of the waistband hang strips of dyed fau and feathers.

These strips have sections of dyed coloured fau which have been handmade in a twist and wrap spiral technique. The dyed feathers are tied on in between each section of fau. The strips all have the same sequence of colours, feathers, and fau so across the width the rows are all the same.
