    Te Riena ni Kibe

  • Description

    Te riena. Scoop net. Riena are used for reef or rock pool fishing, particularly the catching of te urakaraka (small species of reef fish). This example consists of a karaun (fishing net) made with fine, hand-knotted te kora (coconut sinnet) fitted to a wooden frame bent into a tear drop shape. The wood is te uri. The karaun is lashed securely to a kain (shaft) of natural bamboo, an imported resource. The net is light brown in colour.

    This riena was obtained from Rungata village.
